Get your taste buds ready for our tried-and-true list of The Best Donuts in Massachusetts – North Shore edition! You won’t have to travel far to get these incredible confections… so read cautiously! I even included an option for vegan donuts at the very end.
Changing Tides Cafe and Donut Shop
This cafe sits on a side street near downtown Newburyport. The shop offers cake and yeast donuts made fresh every day. They’re light, fluffy and a hit with the locals! I didn’t expect fresh blueberries on top of donuts and thought that was an interesting topping. I love blueberries so of course I had to try it and yum! Get there early on the weekends before the flavors run out.

The Angry Donut Kitchen
The angry donut is a local hidden gem: aside from serving up mouth-watering donut flavors like Chocolate Sea Salt and Maple Bacon, they serve a variety of legendary breakfast sandwiches and drinks for the more savory-inclined customer. They’re open from 8 AM to 2 PM every day, so be sure to grab a coffee to shake the morning dust off!

Sat-Sun: 8am – 3pm
Somebody’s Place serves up comfort food and small-batch old-fashioned donuts every weekday! In addition to perfect renditions of favorites like Boston Cream and Jelly-Filled, they also create specialty flavors like the popular Whoopie Pie donut. Absolutely worth a visit!

Union Square Donuts
Union Square Donuts is perhaps the most iconic shop on our Best Donuts in Massachusetts list. With four locations across the city, it’s an easy stop to add to your next visit to Boston. They have a tantalizing (and famous!) Instagram account (@unionsquaredonuts) where they introduce new weekly flavors and behind-the-scenes footage. Most recently, they had a “Chicken and Waffles” flavor ready for the Superbowl… we had to try it! The maple-glazed donut was covered in fried chicken skin, waffle pieces, and hot honey.
Below is a picture from our recent visit (see the cheesecake brownie bar donuts?! Amazing.)

The Donut Shack
Arguably the best donuts in Massachusetts, The Donut Shack doesn’t disappoint. Just think: handmade donuts made with the highest quality ingredients. You’ll find classic donuts here and then a few surprises, too. Marshmallow-filled and apple-filled donuts get my vote. Come prepared. The shop is cash-only.
Address: 487 Westford St, Lowell MA
Looking for an old school donut shop that serves up fresh baked, old fashion donuts? Donna’s Donuts is the place to go. There’s also novelty items like a donut meatball sub and a donut burger. Besides donuts, they also have a wide variety of breakfast sandwiches and coffee too.
Address: 2106 Main St, Tewksbury, MA
Planted Donuts / Roasted Coffee Bar
Honorable mention for donuts goes to Roasted Coffee Bar. They’ve partnered with a local company to serve up plant-based donuts. That’s right. 100% vegan and natural donuts from a company called Planted Donuts (planteddonuts.com). You can place an order and pick up directly from their kitchen on Saturdays, or simply stop by Roasted Coffee Bar- a Haverhill breakfast spot that opened its doors in 2022 and known for its unique coffee and fresh-baked biscuit sandwiches.
