Welcome to “Cottage Gardens” in Haverhill, MA!
This unique shop is your next one-stop destination for any and all floral/botanical needs you might encounter. We spoke with Christine MacMillian to learn a little bit more about her business and offerings! Read on to see what makes this Haverhill gem so special.
How it Began
Owner Christine MacMillan started her business over 24 years ago in hopes of providing a vast array of plants and flowers to the Haverhill area. She built the cottage building (that now serves as the main gift shop) and eventually added a greenhouse, a potting shed, a bakery building, and, most recently, a quaint vegetable stand out front.
It started with 3 tables and an honesty box.”
Her handiwork threads itself into every aspect of Cottage Gardens: while you’re shopping, be sure to check out her unique display structures, constructed with wood from a 400-year-old barn. It speaks volumes to the dedication Christine has to curating a unique experience for plant-lovers and aesthetic-seekers alike.
Products and services
Cottage Gardens and their staff are the botanical “jacks-of-all-trades”: they offer over 300 varieties of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vegetable plantings. And it doesn’t stop there: they also have landscaping services (including on-site design consultations). During the pandemic, Christine and her staff are even delivering fresh fruits and vegetables to locals free of charge. There’s also a bakery that’s open year-round. Check out the yummy pie below:
Christine loves the flexibility and creative freedom her job allows her. She reflects, “The nice thing about a garden center is that it brings joy to many people, and I wanted to create a beautiful atmosphere where people could come and feel comfortable…[and feel] a sense of peace as they wandered through the flowers.”
Why Haverhill?
She continues: “I chose Haverhill because I wanted a place not too big and not too small where my children would grow up in the same neighborhood and become part of the fabric of where they live. Once we had the two children and bought this home I was not going to move. I bought my home knowing that I could have this business here at the house. I had been teaching for 20 years, had my children at age 41 and 43 and wanted a business where I could raise my children. It started with 3 tables and an honesty box.”
The family-orientated and relaxed feel that Cottage Gardens provides is worth a visit in and of itself…not to mention the plethora of wonderful botanical services. Swing by Cottage Gardens the next time you’re in Haverhill, you won’t regret it!
