Let me just start off by saying: I love Chic Consignment in Andover, MA!
Recently, I started to assess my closet and realize I don’t wear most of the clothing I own. For instance, I fall into the 80/20 category where only 20% of my clothes got worn 80% of the time. And so I began the process of closet decluttering. It was freeing to donate 3 trash bags full of clothing. I want to be more selective about what I bring into my home. In the past, when I saw a shirt I liked, I would ask “Do I like it? Is it cute?” Now I ask myself, “Will this piece work with half the other things in my closet? Will I still like it in 10 years?” If I can’t mix and match outfits with it, I might be better off passing on the purchase.
Hello Chic Consignment
This new mentality shift brings me to Chic Consignment in Andover MA. This store embodies everything I love. Each time I’ve walked away with at least one piece that I loved and could wear for a long time. I love finding high-quality items that will stand the test of time– at a fraction of the retail price! If you haven’t been there yet, you need to go.
The woman behind the business
May Doherty is the savvy business owner behind Chic for the past 5 years. She says, “The thing I love most about what I do is interacting with my customers. As a small business owner, whether in-store or on social media, it’s all about building trust and forming relationships. I like to greet my customers by name and ask about their families and their lives. I especially enjoy sharing my knowledge and love of fashion, and helping my customers appreciate the value of consignment shopping.”
“As a brick-and-mortar store, our marketing goal was to drive business to the store for a unique in-store shopping experience. That included excellent customer service, a knowledgeable sales staff and a fun, energetic environment.”
Who shops at Chic?
“My personal goal was to make Chic Consignment a destination shopping place. With the help of my team, we have succeeded. Our customers come from all over: Boston, Metro west, Northshore, southern New Hampshire, as well as out of state. They love designer brands, quality merchandise and the thrill of the hunt to find luxury and hard to find brands at affordable prices, supplied by our 5000+ consignors. Over the years our customer has evolved into a sophisticated shopper who knows her brands and has come to count on Chic for fair prices.”
“Our demographic is quite broad, ranging from 16-65, with the meat of it being in the 25-55 range. Though we skew higher end, we have something for everyone with brands ranging from Lilly Pulitzer and Lululemon to Chanel and Gucci. We carry Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Hermes, Fendi, Celine, Goyard, YSL, Dior, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Prada, Burberry, Ferragamo, Louboutin, as well as some other mainstream brands like Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Lilly Pulitzer, and Lululemon.”
May continues: “For some women, buying pre-loved consignment allows them to purchase a designer brand that they might not have been able to afford at full price. For others who could well afford to walk into Chanel and buy the double flap bag at full retail, they recognize a good deal when they see one. For still others, they’re looking for the one-of-a-kind piece that makes them stand out from the crowds. All of these people are our customers.”
When asked why she chose to base her business in Andover, May responded: “Andover is a wonderful community with a vibrant, walkable downtown that makes it a destination for shopping and dining.”
How can I learn more about Chic?
Chic’s marketing efforts include daily Instagram and Facebook posts, paid FB ads, and weekly emails. They do 3 Facebook Live shopping videos per week and IG stories videos.
Their new website (chicconsignment.com) is integrated with their software and offers a payment plan called Sezzle. Customers can shop from the comfort of their homes. They ship all over the U.S.
Merchandise from the store has been featured frequently in both Merrimack Valley magazine and Northshore Magazine. They have also worked with Boston area influencers for social media.
There are in-store community events, fundraising events, and authentication events. Authentication is extremely important to them and their reputation is based on it. Their policy is to decline any items they do not believe to be 100% authentic. Note: Events were pre-covid and will resume once we are on the other side of the pandemic.
The next time you’re near Andover, head on over to downtown. Grab lunch at LaRosa’s cafe and walk over to Mr. Gelato cafe for a cold dessert. I love walking the shops around there. It’s how I discovered Chic consignment store! Be sure to let me know what pre-loved, brand name finds you get there.
